Urgent Appeal: Cataract Surgery for Baby Matthew

Matthew is a five month old boy with a cataract in both eyes.
He was blind from birth and needs an operation to see. The operation needs to be done soon, because the brain’s ability to process visual information develops only at a very early age.
The treatment Baby Matthew needs is a simple, very common surgical procedure in each eye to replace the lens, which has a white opacity, with one that is transparent. Matthew needs this cataract surgery urgently because if it is delayed, then he will suffer lifelong deprivation amblyopia, a highly debilitating lack of visual acuity that impacts nearly every aspect of daily life, akin to blindness.
The total cost will be approximately 440 US dollars (1.6 million Ugandan shillings). This includes both eye operations, preoperative tests, (e.g. malaria, CBC), transport, post operative treatment (e.g. steroidal antibiotic eye-drops).
